Test of English Proficiency

All applicants who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

TOEFL

  • A minimum score of 600 with 60 in each subscore, or, on the computerized version of the test, a minimum score of 25 in each section and a total of 250 is required.  The New TOEFL online score minimums are 104 overall, with sub scores of 26 each (No exceptions).  Higher scores may be needed in certain fields.
  • The TOEFL exam has three part scores
    1. Listening
    2. Structure and Written Expression
    3. Reading
  • Please keep in mind that TOEFL Score Reports are valid for two years and scores will be considered expired if the test was taken more than two years prior to the application deadline.

IELTS

  • To meet the University's minimum requirements, you must have minimum scores of 7 in each section and a total of at least 7.
  • The IELTS exam has four part scores
    1. Listening
    2. Reading
    3. Writing
    4. Speaking

    The English Language Proficiency requirement may be waived if the applicant studied on full-time status for at least one academic year (within the last five years) in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and English medium universities in Canada and South Africa. 

    Students who studied in English, for example, in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, African countries, etc. are not exempt from the English Language Proficiency requirement. 

    Please keep in mind that Score Reports are valid for two years and scores will be considered expired if the test was taken more than two years prior to the application deadline.

    Photocopies of TOEFL  and IELTS Score Reports will not be considered valid.

    The ETS institutional code for the University of Chicago is 1832.  Department code is not needed because all scores go to the Office of International Affairs for access.
